I enjoyed the first half of this book much more than the second half. The OZ that Maguire created as a backdrop for our story is dark, mysterious, uncomfortable, full of political turmoils, and unsettling lurking evils. This does not bother me. However, the characters are forced to act inconsistently with the personalities they're given often so eventually each will meet the fate that they are dealt in the original Oz book/movie. It feels untrue and self-indulgent on the author's part. However, I do enjoy the language, the play of ideas/ideals and sympathize greatly with Alphaba (WWW -- the Wicket Witch of the West.)
