Books with Deaf Characters

-- recommended by Debbie McLeod, Jane Yolen, and Pat Hanby

A wonderful fiction book that came out a couple of years ago is *The Gift of the Girl Who Couldn't Hear* by Susan Shreve. Published by Tambourine Books in 1991.

Some older picture books are: *My Sister's Silent World* by Catherine Arthur, *A Button in Her Ear* and *Words in Our Hands* by Ada Litchfield, and *Lisa and Her Soundless World by Edna Levine.

*Trouble with Tuck* and *Tuck Triumphant* deals with a dog that is deaf. Author is Theodore Taylor.

My novel THE MERMAID'S THREE WISDOMS is about a deaf girl and a mermaid who speaks in sign. Now OP, but will be coming back into print in paper in 96 or 97.--Jane Yolen

Another I've though of is Eleanor Spence The Nothing-Place. Glen is a 12-year-old Australian boy who is partially deaf. Her books are very good - many deal with children with some sort of problem in a very sensitive way.

Amy Switzer, a Children's Librarian at Coventry Village Library added: The book Nick's Mission by Claire H. Blatchford (Minneapolis : Lerner Publications, 1995. ISBN 0822507404) features Nick, a deaf sixth grader, is upset about having to go to speech therapy over the summer, until he and his dog stumble on some dangerous smugglers and he learns the mportance of being able to communicate.
